Central Ohio Technical College Improves NCLEX® Outcomes with UWorld

The Challenge: When NCLEX® Prep Feels Routine

At Central Ohio Technical College (COTC), leaders knew that improving National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX®) outcomes would take more than simply increasing the number of practice questions available to students. Although prep resources were in place, faculty began hearing a consistent concern: students didn't feel prepared, and the existing approach wasn't doing enough to change that.

Over time, that disconnect had real consequences. When students question the value of required preparation, engagement suffers. Assignments become tasks to complete rather than opportunities to build clinical judgment and exam readiness. Nurse educator Erin Smith, MSN, RN, saw this firsthand.

Erin Smith notes students saw prior NCLEX prep as busy work and low value.

Resources were in place, but something essential was still missing: the kind of student investment that turns practice into genuine exam readiness.

The Solution: UWorld, a Peer-Recommended Alternative

When students question the value of required preparation, it shows. Faculty end up spending time addressing resistance rather than reinforcing content, and assignments become something to finish rather than something to learn from. For COTC, that was the dynamic that needed to change.

As faculty took a closer look at their NCLEX® preparation strategy, student feedback pointed them in a clear direction. Students were already talking about UWorld, especially peers who had recently passed the NCLEX on their 1st attempt. Word had spread that UWorld made preparation feel worthwhile, not just required.

That feedback mattered. After considering how to better align preparation with student engagement and program expectations, COTC nurse educators adopted UWorld as the program's primary NCLEX preparation resource.

Implementation: Embedding UWorld into COTC Coursework

Students completed 1 required UWorld assignment each week as part of their grade, integrating NCLEX preparation into regular coursework. Assignments were built using a mix of faculty-developed questions and UWorld’s Self-Study Question Bank (QBank) to align practice with course objectives while maintaining exposure to exam-style content.

Faculty used the UWorld NCLEX Learning Platform’s gradebook and reporting features to measure student performance on assignments. Students also had access to the Self-Study QBank, with Adaptive Practice identified as particularly valuable. As Smith noted, “The tools are tailored to multiple learning styles, and the rationales help students understand what they did right or wrong.”

With consistent structure and accountability in place, engagement was reinforced at every step of preparation.

The Results: From Resistance to Engagement

As UWorld became part of the regular coursework rhythm, faculty observed a meaningful increase in student engagement in NCLEX preparation. What had previously been met with resistance began to feel more purposeful to students as weekly graded preparation became routine.

Participation during classroom question review increased as students felt more prepared. Engagement extended beyond completion; students were more willing to discuss practice questions and contribute in class. Across multiple semesters of implementation, the shift was evident not in the quantity of preparation offered, but in how students responded to it.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Student Buy-In

After multiple semesters of implementation, UWorld remains part of COTC's NCLEX preparation strategy. Smith described the platform as “an excellent NCLEX preparation product,” noting its contribution to student confidence and exam readiness.

Faculty continue to observe stronger preparation and engagement among students. By listening to student feedback and reinforcing preparation with consistent expectations, COTC has built a model that aligns faculty intent with student engagement, a balance that continues to shape how the program approaches NCLEX preparation.
